Skykomish (V-)

Description: The Skykomish River is a short and fun local trip located along Highway 2 between Big Eddy fishing area and the town of Index. It is about 8 miles of class III-IV rapids with the notorious Boulder Drop a big water and technical drop rated class IV+ to V, depending on the water level. The trip lasts about 2 1/2 hours on the river, and there is typically time to enjoy the rest of your afternoon.

Once on river, which is actually the North Fork of the Skykomish, you'll enter some technical rapids with many rocks to dodge. Frequent bumps and hang-ups are common. Just before the convergence with the South Fork of the Skykomish to form the Skykomish, you drop down a nice rapid with a big hole depending on water levels.

Another stretch of class III rapids bring you to the top of Boulder Drop. It is advised to scout this rapid on river right. It's a great boulder garden with your choice of "The Pickets" and "Airplane Turn" at the top followed by "House Rock" in the middle downstream. There are several nice holes that can flip a raft or reach up and grab unsuspecting paddlers. It's a true adrenalin rush all the way through and will leave you elated with a sense of accomplishment each and every time.

Just after Boulder Drop, BEWET will sometimes stop for lunch here to watch the comical adventures and follies of other river rats. The large rocks make great bird's eye perches to picnic on, especially on a rare sunny day when you can bask in the sun.

The next exciting area is Lunch Hole. At a right hand bend in the river, the water pushes you towards the one-two punch with Lunch Hole attempting to overturn the rafts and the second hole to cool down any swimmers. It's advisable to stay away from this unless your raft is full of guides and trainees who don't mind swimming. The swim has been rather benign each time I've participated although it can give a shock to someone who's unprepared. Right after Lunch Hole is BEWET's second choice lunch stop, hence the name.

The remainder of the river has some mild rapids to keep you occupied. Mostly it's a relaxing stretch so you can reflect upon the thrill of Boulder Drop. You will typically see many fishermen and the occasional bald eagle. The scenery is absolutely stunning with the tall, snow-covered peaks surrounding the Skykomish valley.

On a sunny day with the water flowing, this is a most magnificent trip regardless the season.

Directions: Approximately one hour 30 minutes from Southcenter via I-405. From I-405 take State Route 522 to Monroe and Highway 2 to Big Eddy fishing area for the takeout or to Index Cafe and turn left towards the town of Index and follow to the railroad bridge for the put-in. Please be considerate of other boaters and try not to block the put-in or take-out with personal vehicles or the club truck.
