Kalama (IV-)

Print

Description: The Kalama used to be a good early spring run (i.e recent rainfall) through beautiful thick forest and moss-covered rock outcropping, with a few Class III rapids and one Class IV (Leader). I say used to be because, due to vandalism and trash deposits, Weyerhauser decided to close access to the upper portions in the late 1990's. Until access is restored, only the lower 6 miles from just above Summers Creek to the Hatchery (which includes Leader) can be run. If access to the upper portions is ever restored, you can also go further up than the regular Arnold Creek put-in, and do a steep put-in at the Jack Creek bridge, and test your skills through a tough Class IV called Double Drop (scout recommended).

This is a good trip to combine with the Toutle River.

Directions: From Seattle allow 2 1/2 hours. Take I-5 South to Exit 32, Kalama River road.
